If I could watch any TV show for the first time again it would definitely have to be Game of Thrones.
I truly believe it’s was one of the most epic series ever put on television, and not just because it’s based on a huge series of books. The scale of the production was just massive and taking basically a decade to release all seasons, with every season getting higher ratings than the last, I truly don’t know if we’ll ever see anything like it again.
I believe we are living in the post-GoT TV series era, and in the main, it sucks. A big part of that is that because GoT did SO well every season, every production house wants to replicate that upward trajectory, so the minute a single season of a new show does poorly, it gets canned. I guarantee you can name a TV series in the fantasy space that’s been booted after just one or two seasons. It’s heartbreaking.
Aside from this emotional trauma production houses are putting us through, here is why I loved GoT (spoilers incoming!):
- The honorable main character, Ned Stark (Sean Bean), becomes the father you love, and is killed by the end of S1. The pain hits early and his death becomes the catalyst for so many terrible and painful storylines. His family are split and thrown across the 7 kingdoms which brings them into the overarching story. I love that the kindness of Ned Stark is displayed between his children when, after much pain and trauma, they meet each other and can finally reunite as a family.
- Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is an absolute badass! Give me a kickass female lead any day. She discovers her incredible powers as the Mother of Dragons and (MAJOR SPOILER) dies fighting for the Iron Throne. She’s surrounded by a tonne of fantastic female characters like Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Ygritte (Rose Leslie) and the ever-heightful Brienne of Tarth (Gwnedoline Christie). Some of these women are kind, others complex, but they feature heavily across the narrative.
- The Night King and the White Walkers are hugely compelling characters, and their arc in the show is irresistable. Not only do we experience the difficulties of families fighting within the 7 kingdoms, there’s a whole other kingdom coming for all of them over the wall. I was always so excited when we finally got to see another moment of the Night King and his crew, and the show was so good at giving you just a small glimpse and moving on to keep you hooked.
Would you watch this show with fresh eyes like me?
