The Top 4 Fantasy Books on My TBR List

A big pile of books stacked on top of each other, a picture of Jess smiling and the heading 'The Top 4 Fantasy Books On My TBR'

Read someone’s TBR, and you get a little glimpse into their mind. You learn about their interests, curiosities and the adventures they’re about to embark on. Today I’m going to share 4 fantasy books I have on my TBR and am really excited to finally start on! Hopefully some day soon (we all know this feeling, amirite?).

#1 Tress of the Emerald Sea
By Brandon Sanderson
Tress of the Emerald Sea, written by Brandon Sanderson

Like many people I have frolicked over the many lilly pads that is Brandon Sanderson’s writing. The man must have extra arms for the amount of stories he pumps out! I am currently reading the second book in his Mistborn series, The Well of Ascension, and with every page have fallen deeper into my obsession with the worlds he builds. His approach and structure with magic systems deserves study. As an author I desperately want to uncover his secret sauce! I did write a whole blog just on his fantastical prowess because I just love his approach.

For this book I’ve heard smatterings of similarity to The Princess Bride, whimsy, loveable characters, and emotional depth. There’s mention of seas, ships and pirates and I’m always down for a bit of a yo-ho-ho, so I’m keen to crack the spine on this once I’ve finished with the Mistborn series.

#2 Six of Crows
By Leigh Bardugo
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I am yet to read a book by Leigh Bardugo, but in watching the Shadow & Bone adaption by Netflix I was hooked! This TV series was an adaption of two of her book series, Shadow & Bone as the name states but they also wove in the storyline of Six of Crows (with some tweaks from what I have learnt). It did earn a place on my favourite TV series list! The characters and the story from the Crows story was much more interesting and engaging, so I’m keen to dive into this series first. My particular favourite was Inej, a Wraith with immaculate assasination skills.

Reviews tell me this book is fun, full of twists and turns, and although many have said they took a while to feel connected to the characters, they eventually eased in. Some have said the second book is better than this first instalment, but perhaps it felt different as readers were settled within the Grishaverse. Keen to check this one out!

#3 The Prince of Mist
By Carlos Ruiz Zafón (Lucia Graves – Translator)

This was a recent recommendation and it has caught my attention. It sounds like this story errs on the side of a mystery novel (which I love!) with the search for a boy who died in a house by the sea, and a strange spirit coming back to try and collect from a debt of the past. Again there’s mention of sunken ships and enchanted stone gardens, this is my kind of jam!

Reviews are a little mixed, but I’ve seen mentions of it being beautifully written and ‘spooky’, so I’m keen to give it a try.

#4 The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time #1)
By Robert Jordan

I am a little ashamed to call myself a fan of fantasy having not read this series (yet!). For those unaware Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series began in the 90s and has continued on even past his death! Brandon Sanderson finished the last few books in this series after Jordan’s passing, what an accomplishment and such big shoes to fill! Originally this series was planned as a trilogy, but blew out into a 14-book saga! Jordan apparently left quite detailed notes on the story, and that’s how Sanderson was able to wrap this series up.

Reviews seem to be filled with the die-hard fantasy fans, especially fans of Tolkien, who’s work apparently did inspire Jordan. It sounds slower, which I’m OK with (if I know ahead of time) as I have endured and enjoyed Outlander! But I love any series that dives deep, so keen to dive deep on this at some stage.
