I love a good writing prompt. Every 2 weeks I give myself the challenge to grab a writing prompt online that sparks an idea and try to write a piece of fiction from the prompt in and around 500 words.
WRITING PROMPT:
Write about a dragon who doesn’t know what to do with their hoard anymore.
The Dragon Spend
Written by Jess Knaus
Chickens.
Delicious.
No! Cows.
Definitely cows.
I love cows. Roasted on a spit, dipped in BBQ sauce, fries on the side.
POTATOES! Need potatoes to make the fries to go with those cows.
I’ll need a drink. Pineapple juice! Need a few thousand pineapples.
But I can’t leave.
I can’t. This is my gold. MY gold. If I leave, the villagers will sneak in and take it. How, I’m not sure. But they will! They’re crafty 4-limbed fiends. And they smell of dairy. Why do they eat so much dairy?
Maybe if I get Levi from the grasslands he can sit in my place. I can get him some cows as payment. He loves them too, you see.
But…maybe sheep would be better? Which would be better value, cows or sheep?
Levi!…Levi!
He’s taking a while to come. The grasslands are about four leagues away.
Tap, tap, tap, tap.
He’s taking a bit longer than usual.
Oh here he is. Oh you were napping, so sorry. Thanks for coming.
I can’t decide whether I should get cows or sheep with my gold. What do you think?
Horses? Hmmm I’m not so keen.
Camels? They’re too chewy.
Sharks? Ew, no I hate seafood.
Whales? Mate they’re bigger than me, how on earth will I get one onshore? And its seafood! Hate. Seafood.
Levi! Wait where are you going?! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be difficult!
Gahhhh. He’s gone.
Sigh.
Wait a minute, what’s that sound?
It’s a moo! Cows!!
In the field just down there.
Won’t need my gold after all.
