I love a good writing prompt. Every 2 weeks I give myself the challenge to grab a writing prompt online that sparks an idea and try to write a piece of fiction from the prompt in and around 500 words.
Here’s my latest attempt! Enjoy 🙂
WRITING PROMPT:
Start your story with your character(s) going to buy some flowers.
Red Flowers

OWEN
They said they like roses. Wait, no lillies. Ah dang it! That wasn’t it. Crap crap crap. I suck with flowers.
We were talking about their trip to Italy – driving through the countryside up north before catching the train to Paris. They liked the fruit shops that had flowers on display – the red ones, the… gahhh what flower was it?
We talked about flowers so much in our chat I’ve totally lost track.
Think back, think back, think back. We were talking about our recent overseas trips.
After Paris they caught the train through Belgium up into the Netherlands which yes, is known for tulips and yes, they liked tulips, but were they their favourite?
Maybe I should call them and just casually try to find out? You know, that old, ‘haha after our chat I ran into X and we chatted about tulips’ and wait for a bit, hoping they’ll reply with ‘oh those are my favourite!’.
But I suck at acting, let alone phone acting. They’ll know I’ve forgotten. God I’m so annoyed, why do I remember the strangest things that don’t matter but cannot remember something significant and important?
Maybe the florist can help. I know the flowers are red.
‘Hey, hey how are you? I’m trying to remember what flower someone likes but I can’t remember which one it is. I know they’re red. Do you have any ideas?’
‘Tulips.’
‘Roses.’
‘Chrysanthemum.’
‘Marigold.’
‘Anemone.’
‘Zinnia.’
‘Ok I have no idea.’
‘Thanks for your help.’
Swipe.
Ok, surely most people love receiving flowers no matter what they are so maybe I should just chill and buy something, anything. Maybe I can say their favourites weren’t available and these were all I could find. Those ones. No wait, those ones. Yeah, those ones.
‘Could I have those ones please?’
Gosh I’m feeling hot.
Ok these will have to do.
‘Keep the change, thanks.’
